There is a photograph taken of me when I was about 5 and I am sitting in a clothes basket with a huge sketch pad propped in my lap, drawing something.  I have never stopped drawing or painting since and I realized even at a young age that making art would be my life's passion.
I have dedicated many years to portrait and figurative work and am fascinated with capturing the essence of a person.  I frequently incorporate one or more figures with a space that I invent.  This background may include or juxtapose images that have certain meanings or perhaps be an abstract space.  My work is based in memories, relationships, references from the past and how I translate these experiences.
I am inspired by and study the works of Alice Neel, Andrew Wyeth, Frida Kahlo, Gustav Klimt, Lucain Freid and R.B. Kitaj.  I am also intrigued by the paintings of the surrealists and find their play on images and interpretation of the subconscious very interesting.  Color is an integral part of my self-expression.  Its richness, beauty and symbolism help me to convey the feelings and emotions I intend to evoke.  I work with oil paints mostly and sometimes use mixed media such as collage, pastels and charcoal.
My work is about capturing a moment in time and revealing the layers of a person's essence while drawing in the viewer's own emotional connection.
