Commissions

Initial Inquiry

The process begins with the client’s initial inquiry. This can be done through email or the contact form on my website. The client should provide their contact information and a brief description of what is desired.

Initial Discussion

The client and I have an initial discussion to understand the client's vision for the painting. This can be done in person, over the phone, or via video call.

Topics to discuss include the subject of the painting, size preferences, and any specific details or preferences.

I ask that clients view my portfolio to ensure they are familiar with my work and artistic style.

Agreement and Contract

Once we have a clear understanding of the project, I will draft a commission agreement or contract. This contract will outline important details such as timeline, price, payment schedule, copyright ownership, and any other terms and conditions. Both parties will review and sign the contract to ensure mutual understanding and commitment.

Photo Session or Reference Material

For local residents who want to commission a portrait painting, I schedule a photo session with the subject(s) of the painting which enables me to create a connection between myself as the artist and the subject(s). This also helps me to conceptualize ideas for composition, mood and surroundings.  For non-local clients, I ask that they send me a variety of photos of the subject(s) which I will go through to determine the ones that truly capture the person or pet and will also result in the most complete and interesting painting.

Artistic Process

I begin the process by creating preliminary sketches as I work out my ideas. At this stage I will connect with the client to talk about the ideas and to ensure that the client is satisfied with the concept before I begin.

Whether I take photos myself or go through ones that have been sent to me, I will be thorough in taking the time to narrow down the one(s) that I choose to work with. Canvas is what I predominantly paint on but I also enjoy painting on wood panels. I use oil paints because I appreciate the richness of colors that can be layered and blended in beautiful ways. Oil paints take much longer to dry than other paints so this will affect the timeline of the process. Depending on the size of the piece I am working on, my painting process could take months to complete. Please keep this in mind when inquiring about a commissioned piece.

Final Stage and Presentation

Once the painting has had adequate time to dry and several layers of varnish have been applied and allowed to cure, I will deliver or ship the painting to the client. It is at this point that the “reveal” happens.  As the painting goes through many stages, sometimes with me working out the ideas right on the canvas, it is best to show the client the finished piece rather than throughout the process. The edges of the canvas will be painted and the piece ready to be hung. If framing is desired, I can assist the client in selecting an appropriate frame and make recommendations for frame shops.

Final Payment and Completion

The final payment is made by the client as per the terms outlined in the contract. I provide care instructions for the artwork. The commission is considered complete, and both parties maintain a record of the transaction. The artist may request permission to showcase the artwork on their portfolio or website, with respect to the client's privacy preferences.
